Event Location & Schedule

Heart of Iowa Midwifery & Birth
2485 SE 1st St
West Des Moines, IA 50265

April 17 & 18, 2027

Both days begin at 8:00 AM and conclude at approximately 5:00 PM. Please plan to arrive around 7:45 AM so everyone is ready to begin on time.

What to Expect During Your Two Days

Our hands-on ultrasound education events are designed to give women's health providers meaningful scanning experience in a small-group setting with an experienced instructor.

During the first day, participants begin with a simulation experience to become familiar with handling the transducer, recognizing anatomical structures, and understanding cross-sectional anatomy. From there, the group moves into hands-on scanning with real volunteers.

Throughout the two days, participants will have opportunities to practice gynecologic, first-trimester, second-trimester, and third-trimester scanning. Education includes gestational age measurements, anatomical review, placental location, amniotic fluid volume, fetal presentation, cervical length, and biophysical profiles.

The second day provides additional opportunities to practice, revisit concepts, ask questions, and build on the skills introduced during the first day.

Lunch is provided both days, and participants will complete evaluations and receive their certificates of completion at the conclusion of the event.

A Few Things to Keep in Mind

Our scanning schedule is based on volunteer availability, so the order of activities may change. While we make every effort to accommodate specific trimester preferences, exact matches are not always possible. Our instructors are experienced in adjusting the schedule and providing alternative educational opportunities when needed.

These are full days of hands-on education, so we recommend wearing comfortable clothing and shoes. You're welcome to bring water, coffee, and snacks throughout the day. If you need to step out briefly for a call or break, you're welcome to do so.

Some participants also find it helpful to print slides from the online Comprehensive Ultrasound Course and bring them along for reference and note-taking.

Traveling With a Friend or Colleague?

We love when providers attend our events together! If you're traveling with a friend or colleague, you can request to be placed in the same group when completing your registration form.

We do our best to accommodate these requests on a first-come, first-served basis. Groups of four work especially well, and larger groups may be divided between instructors depending on ticket availability.

Already Purchased the Online Course?

If you've previously purchased our Comprehensive Ultrasound Course, you're eligible for a refund of the amount you paid for that course when registering for a hands-on event.

Simply purchase your hands-on event ticket and complete the registration form that is automatically emailed to you. Once you've submitted your registration, send Casey a copy of your original online course receipt, and we'll process your refund.

Please remember that completion of the online Comprehensive Ultrasound Course is required before attending your hands-on scanning days.

Who Can Attend?

Our hands-on ultrasound education events are designed for women's health providers, including Certified Nurse Midwives, Certified Midwives, Certified Professional Midwives, Licensed Midwives, Nurse Practitioners, and Physician Associates.

All skill levels are welcome! Whether you're just beginning to incorporate ultrasound into your practice or looking to strengthen your existing skills, our instructors work with participants at their individual experience levels.

Have More Questions?

We want you to feel prepared and confident before attending your event! If you have questions about registration, course requirements, scheduling, or anything else, please reach out to Casey directly.

  • "I’ve taken an US course before, but nothing like this one. The 2 days of doing US on person after person really helped everything from the online modules to “click.” I know so much more than I did going into the course. Highly recommend if you even might need to use US for something. I verified my IUD placement and looked for placenta previa (diagnosed elsewhere), which I did find. Before I wouldn’t have known where the cervix was in US. It was also nice only having 4 students per group because we all got plenty time to practice plus lots of instructor feedback. Another nice thing that I didn’t know when I signed up: if you paid for the course at any point, you can always contact them for pointers/help or to remotely monitor your US skills if you wanted to do the certification."

  • "I learned way more at the ultrasound for women's health providers than I expected. I used some of the skills I learned THE VERY NEXT DAY I WAS IN CLINIC! Very relevant and wonderful training. Would recommend to anyone."

  • "The two-day course really helped to consolidate my knowledge and gave us all a lot of hands-on experience with patients. Michelle and Gay were great instructors - very knowledgeable and equally supportive!"

  • "This two day event was intense but so valuable for hands on learning. The instructors were knowledgeable and gave practical tips for getting the best pictures. I’m so glad I was able to attend and fully expect it to enhance my clinical practice."

  • "I had a great experience with this class. Michelle is an excellent instructor. I was super tired from a hectic week and was dreading a long class on my weekend, but I was pleasantly surprised with what a joy the class was! I found the content to be super interesting in the online learning portion and really enjoyed putting it into practice with the hands-on learning. Michelle is inviting, easy to learn from, and made the day really fun! Highly recommend this class."

  • "Ultrasound for Women's Health Providers is a great resource, especially if you do not have a local source for training. The online portion was easy to navigate. It is done in chapters so you can come back to it so you don't have to do it all at once. It was complete through all aspects of ultrasound in pregnancy & well woman check up. We also arranged to have a Hands on training and our instructor Nora was AMAZING. She was very kind and patient while we were learning new skills. She was very informative and we were able to get a lot of knowledge in, in 1 day. I highly recommend this course!"

  • "I learned so much at the hands -on clinic and had so many a-ha moments that clicked into place. I definitely need to perform a lot more scans to feel competent, but I feel like I walked away with the tools and understanding to get there with practice.
